We're Building!
If you follow me on Instagram (@sundayhomesrva) then you saw that I broke the news that Ricky and I decided to make the big move and build a home. After the arrival of our girls in April we immediately felt the impact of going from a family of two to a family of four. If no one told you, babies come with a lot of stuff and having two babies at once means having twice the stuff. The OCD parts of my and Ricky’s personalities are really struggling with what feels like a lack of storage so in June we started discussing our next move. To make this speedy and get to the good stuff, I’m going to hit the highlights of why we're moving, why we decided to build instead of buy, and why this matters to you.
Why We’re Moving
We really need a garage
We don’t have storage for a twin level of baby items
We need a true office where we can close the doors
With our families staying pretty often we need a real guest bedroom
As the twins grow, they will need a larger room
We now (more than before anyway) host larger family dinners and need a larger dining space
Our floor plan is more closed currently and as the girls grow, we want to be able to see them while we prep dinner or do other chores
We’d love a neighborhood with sidewalks for the girls to be able to ride their bikes
Why We’re Building
This is a much longer story, but the short version is we found the perfect home last year. It was in a nearby neighborhood, was all brick, had a basement and a three car detached garage. It had been well taken care of and needed just the right amount of updating. With the market being so intense though we didn’t even get to put in an offer. After having that crushing experience (yep it even happens to Realtors) and seeing how the market was continuing to trend in an upward, ever more competitive direction, we decided building was our better option. Aside from it making the most financial sense for us, I also started working for a builder earlier in 2021 and Ricky and I fell in love with their designs, their team, and the model. While the neighborhood we are building in is one I said I’d never move to because it was too far from all the things I love (mostly restaurants and Wegmans) we decided it was the best long-term move for the life we wanted our girls to have growing up. So, we’re moving to RounTrey and building with River City Custom Homes. I'll share a post following this one that goes over the process and some of the decisions we've already made (like floor plan) in a week or so.
Why This Matters to You
Now, I know this may seem like a boastful post and trust me, we’re so excited, but the real reason I’m sharing all of this is because I get so many questions from buyers about buying vs building and what building entails. So I thought it would be fun to bring you all along for the journey. Throughout our build I’m going to take you behind the scenes through a video series that will show us making decisions from beginning to end. I thought what better way to explain what it’s like to build than to show you! Building isn’t always pretty, it has its tough moments, but it is also really cool and a once (maybe twice) in a lifetime experience.
