5 Questions to Ask at Thanksgiving This Year
The true kick-off of the holiday season is upon us: Thanksgiving Day! If you ask most people they tend to say Christmas or another winter holiday is their favorite but Thanksgiving is undervalued. I’ll be honest, as a kid I definitely thought the big T-day was just a reason to be off school for three days and eat a super early dinner in my grandparents dining room. Now that I’m an adult hosting Thanksgivings at my own home though I have a different appreciation for the day. 
While Christmas and other winter holidays have a more apparent purpose - gifts for some, religion for others - but Thanksgiving is a holiday we have to work to remember The Why. Have you ever Googled “Why do we celebrate Thanksgiving day?” Do you think Thanksgiving is about celebrating the first feast between Pilgrims and Indians? I certainly did. That’s what we’ve always been taught in school. Well according to this article by the Washington Post, that is not the true reason we celebrate Thanksgiving. You can read the full article but apparently we celebrate T-Day because the editor of Godey’s Lady’s Book, Sarah Josepha Hale, insisted to President Abraham Lincoln that we needed this national holiday. #MindBlown In the spirit of our elementary school reasoning for Thanksgiving I challenge you to gain a deeper knowledge of your family history and your present family members. Ask about the war your Grandpa was in. Learn about their childhoods; ask about the people in your family (like your Great Great Grandparents) that you never had a chance to meet. Share about your own life too. Once you get the conversations going it’ll be amazing to hear the stories and the memories your family has within it.
