5 Tips for Downsizing Like a Pro
We're nearing the end of February which means we're steps closer to spring! Spring is the busiest home buying season and buying a home means you'll soon be packing up and moving. For me, moving was always a great excuse to go through everything in our apartment and decide what I really wanted to keep and what I didn't want to keep enough to waste space in a box and move to another home.My buyers always tell me how overwhelmed they are at this stage of their home buying journey and while I have a few great tips in my pocket I thought I'd enlist some advice from downsizing and organizing extraordinaire Jennifer King of Absolute Organizing.
5 Tips for Downsizing Like a Pro for Your Move
Preparing for an upcoming move can be overwhelming. Whether you are relocating to a smallerhome, or just want to reduce the amount of belongings you own to make your move easier, these 5 tips will keep you on track and downsizing like a pro.
1. Work Room-by- Room
Begin by focusing on just one space at a time. It’s easy to get distracted if you are constantly leaving the area to place items that don't belong in the correct room, so make a “doesn’t belong” pile so you can stay focused and move those items later on.
2. Start With “Go” Items
Keep your momentum going by starting with items that you already know need to go. If youopen a cabinet or a drawer and don't know where to start, that’s ok, skip it for now and move on to those clothes or items that you know you aren't keeping. You can come back to the cabinet later on but by then you will have the confidence boost to power through it once you see the amount of items you have already decided to let go.
3. It’s OK To “Think About It”
To keep from feeling overwhelmed, don’t spend too much time deciding if you want to keepgrandma’s old chair or that sweater your sister gave you for your birthday two years ago. Instead, create a “Think About” pile to reassess after your finished with the entire area. This will make the “letting go” process much easier as you aren’t spending too much time forcing yourself to make tough decisions and allows you to keep moving forward.
4. Group “Like With Like”
It’s much easier to make decisions on what stays and what goes when you see how many ofeach item you actually own. For example, you probably don't need to pack 12 umbrellas so as you come across items that you already have keep them together to make decision makingeasier.
5. Cash-In On “Go” Items
Technology makes it so much easier to connect with people and the same goes for findingbuyers for those items you don't want to move. Ebay, local FB groups and other outlets are the perfect place to post items at discounted prices. That old couch that you would have to pay tohave removed? Post it for a serious discount, or for free, and you save yourself the hassle ofhaving to move it yourself and make extra cash to put toward your upcoming move.*Safety first when posting “for sale” items online and you should always exercise caution whengiving out your address.
